Who Is Yoel Marrero?

Yoel Marrero is a Cuban researcher, educator, and creator dedicated to the study, analysis, and systematization of Cuban social dances.

Graduated in Chemistry from the University of Havana, he spent years working in teaching and research, experiences that deeply influenced the way he observes and analyzes complex phenomena. This scientific background allowed him to transfer methods of observation, classification, modeling, and formulation to the study of Casino dancing.

In the late 1990s, he began a personal research project aimed at understanding the internal structure of Casino. What initially emerged as a practical concern gradually evolved into a long-term research endeavor that continued to develop in Cuba, Japan, the United States, and Europe.

As a result of this work, concepts such as the MCC Coreogram, the Fall Position, Choreographic Navigation, Choreographic Leading, Choreographic Topology, and Well-Formed Casino were developed, among many other elements that form part of the system known as the Casino Square Method.

His work has focused on creating tools that allow Cuban social dances to be understood, taught, reproduced, preserved, and further developed through explicit and verifiable technical criteria.

What Is the Casino Square Method (MCC)?

The Casino Square Method, known by its Spanish acronym MCC (Método del Cuadro del Casino), is a system for the analysis, representation, teaching, and optimization of Casino dancing developed by Yoel Marrero.

Its fundamental objective is to identify and explicitly describe the structures that operate within Casino and that have traditionally remained implicit or scattered throughout empirical teaching practices.

The MCC is based on a simple premise:

Every complex phenomenon can be studied if its components, relationships, and governing principles are properly identified.

Applied to Casino, this means studying:

  • Body positions.

  • Displacements and movements.

  • Choreographic trajectories.

  • Leading mechanisms.

  • Spatial relationships between partners.

What Is Well-Formed Casino?

Well-Formed Casino is the formalized style that results from applying the principles and tools of the Casino Square Method to Casino dancing.

It is not a different dance.

Rather, it is a technically refined, structurally organized, and methodologically optimized form of Casino itself.

While empirical Casino is generally transmitted through observation and imitation, Well-Formed Casino seeks to ensure that dancers consciously understand what they are doing.

Empirical Casino is typically characterized by:

  • High technical variability.

  • Dependence on memorized patterns.
