Who Is Yoel Marrero?
Yoel Marrero is a Cuban researcher, educator, and creator dedicated to the study, analysis, and systematization of Cuban social dances.
Graduated in Chemistry from the University of Havana, he spent years working in teaching and research, experiences that deeply influenced the way he observes and analyzes complex phenomena. This scientific background allowed him to transfer methods of observation, classification, modeling, and formulation to the study of Casino dancing.
In the late 1990s, he began a personal research project aimed at understanding the internal structure of Casino. What initially emerged as a practical concern gradually evolved into a long-term research endeavor that continued to develop in Cuba, Japan, the United States, and Europe.
As a result of this work, concepts such as the MCC Coreogram, the Fall Position, Choreographic Navigation, Choreographic Leading, Choreographic Topology, and Well-Formed Casino were developed, among many other elements that form part of the system known as the Casino Square Method.
His work has focused on creating tools that allow Cuban social dances to be understood, taught, reproduced, preserved, and further developed through explicit and verifiable technical criteria.
What Is the Casino Square Method (MCC)?
The Casino Square Method, known by its Spanish acronym MCC (Método del Cuadro del Casino), is a system for the analysis, representation, teaching, and optimization of Casino dancing developed by Yoel Marrero.
Its fundamental objective is to identify and explicitly describe the structures that operate within Casino and that have traditionally remained implicit or scattered throughout empirical teaching practices.
The MCC is based on a simple premise:
Every complex phenomenon can be studied if its components, relationships, and governing principles are properly identified.
Applied to Casino, this means studying:
Body positions.
Displacements and movements.
Choreographic trajectories.
Leading mechanisms.
Spatial relationships between partners.
The generation and combination of figures.
To achieve this, the MCC has developed specific tools such as:
The MCC Coreogram.
MCC Notation.
MCC Nomenclature.
The Theory of Choreographic Navigation.
The Theory of Choreographic Leading.
The Theory of Choreographic Topology.
The Theory of Choreographic Synthesis.
From this perspective, the MCC functions simultaneously as:
A Method of Separation
Because it identifies and isolates the elements that constitute Casino.
A Method of Concentration
Because it allows those elements to be studied with greater depth and precision.
A Method of Analysis
Because it decomposes figures into observable and reproducible components.
A Method of Choreographic Synthesis
Because it allows those components to be recombined in order to create new figures and new choreographic solutions.
Its purpose is not to replace traditional Casino, but rather to understand it more deeply and provide tools for its preservation, transmission, and future development.
What Is Well-Formed Casino?
Well-Formed Casino is the formalized style that results from applying the principles and tools of the Casino Square Method to Casino dancing.
It is not a different dance.
Rather, it is a technically refined, structurally organized, and methodologically optimized form of Casino itself.
While empirical Casino is generally transmitted through observation and imitation, Well-Formed Casino seeks to ensure that dancers consciously understand what they are doing.
Empirical Casino is typically characterized by:
Learning through imitation.
Intuitive understanding of figures.
High technical variability.
Dependence on memorized patterns.
Lack of formal analytical tools.
Well-Formed Casino seeks to develop:
Structural understanding.
Conscious navigation.
Optimized leading.
Technical reproducibility.
Analytical capability.
Creative and synthetic capability.
The Five Pillars of Well-Formed Casino
1. Choreographic Structure
Answers the question:
What is being done?
It studies:
Positions.
Individual Structural Steps.
Structural Figures.
Structural Routines.
2. Choreographic Navigation
Answers:
Where is each dancer moving?
It studies:
Trajectories.
Routes.
Nodes.
Coreograms.
Position exchanges.
3. Choreographic Leading
Answers:
How is information transmitted between partners?
It studies:
Connections.
Tensions.
Forces.
Weight transfers.
Leading mechanisms.
4. Choreographic Optimization
Answers:
What is the most efficient way to execute a figure?
It analyzes:
Ergonomics.
Economy of movement.
Functionality.
Technical efficiency.
5. Choreographic Topology and Synthesis
Answers:
What other figures can be generated from this one?
It makes it possible to:
Create new figures.
Design combinations.
Build choreographic algorithms.
Expand the dancer's repertoire.
The Ultimate Goal
The objective of Well-Formed Casino is not simply to learn more figures.
Its purpose is to develop a dancer who can:
Understand what they are doing.
Explain what they are doing.
Reproduce it accurately.
Detect errors.
Correct errors.
Create new choreographic solutions.
In other words, it seeks to transform intuitive knowledge into conscious knowledge.
A Simple Analogy
Well-Formed Casino is to empirical Casino what engineering is to intuitive construction.
It does not replace experience.
It organizes it.
It explains it.
It perfects it.
Doctrinal Formula
Choreographic freedom does not emerge from the absence of structure.
It emerges from the conscious mastery of a structure that has been understood.
For this reason, one of the fundamental principles of the Casino Square Method states:
TECHNIQUE LIBERATES
