What is the Method of the Casino Square Method (MCC)?

If the problem of Casino dance has been, for decades, its empirical transmission and the absence of a clear language to understand it, then the inevitable question is this:

what can replace that deficiency?

The answer is the Method of the Casino Grid (MCC).

The MCC does not arise from a trend, but from a necessity

The MCC did not emerge as a simple teaching proposal, nor as just another stylistic variation within the dance market.

It arose from a concrete necessity:

the need to structurally understand Casino dance.

For a long time, Casino was transmitted as repertoire, as habit, as accumulated imitation.
But not as an intelligible system.

What was missing was not enthusiasm or practice.
What was missing was a tool capable of:

  • observing the dance with precision,

  • describing it clearly,

  • explaining it logically,

  • and teaching it with reproducibility.

That is the gap the MCC comes to fill.

What the acronym MCC means

MCC stands for Method of the Casino Grid.

It is a system developed by Yoel Marrero since 1998, as the result of a prolonged process of observation, experimentation, modeling, practical verification, and theoretical formulation.

It is not an arbitrary collection of ideas.
It is not a set of new names for the same old confusions.

It is a methodological proposal that seeks to define, formalize, and technically standardize the functioning of Casino dance.

A method to understand, not just to repeat

The MCC is based on a central idea:

Casino dance can and must be understood as a system.

This means that its figures are not isolated sequences, but expressions of an internal structure.

It also means that:

  • movements follow a logic,

  • positions have a function,

  • leading has identifiable mechanisms,

  • and the form of the dance can be described, compared, corrected, and taught.

From this perspective, the MCC does not merely teach “what to do,” but allows one to understand:

what is being done, how it is being done, why it works, and when it stops working.

From empiricism to analysis

The difference between purely empirical teaching and the MCC is radical.

In the empirical model:

  • learning happens through repetition,

  • correction happens through habit,

  • and validation depends on appearance or social acceptance.

In the MCC, however:

  • the dance is observed,

  • analyzed,

  • characterized,

  • named,

  • organized,

  • and transmitted with defined criteria.

This shifts dance from the realm of mere imitation to the realm of technical knowledge.

MCC as a paradigm shift

The MCC is not only a teaching method.

It is also a paradigm shift in the way Cuban social dances are understood.

For a long time, these dances have been treated as phenomena impossible to fully systematize, as if their richness depended precisely on remaining ambiguous.

The MCC breaks with that idea.

It affirms that the richness of dance does not disappear when it is understood.
On the contrary:

understanding expands freedom, improves execution, and multiplies choreographic possibilities.

That is why the MCC does not impoverish Casino dance.
It reveals it.

A system that goes beyond Casino

Although in this course the MCC is applied specifically to Well-Formed Casino, its scope is broader.

The MCC constitutes a theoretical body designed to technically characterize Cuban social dances of empirical transmission, especially:

  • Danzón,

  • Son,

  • and Casino.

The application of this theoretical body allows these dances to be formalized and guided toward a new category defined by its author as Well-Formed Social Dances.

In this sense, the MCC is not only a practical methodology.
It is also a foundation for a new choreological reading of Cuban tradition.

Scientific method applied to dance

One of the defining features of the MCC is its analytical orientation.

It does not limit itself to describing subjective impressions or repeating inherited formulas.
It works through systematic observation, differentiation of components, formulation of internal relationships, and practical verification.

For this reason, the MCC can be understood as an application of the scientific method to the technical-choreographic analysis of social dance.

Not in a decorative or rhetorical sense, but in an operational one:

  • observing the phenomenon,

  • identifying its elements,

  • modeling it,

  • verifying it,

  • and reproducing it.

This is one of the aspects that most clearly distinguishes it from conventional intuitive teaching.

What changes when MCC appears

With the emergence of the MCC, Casino dance ceases to be only an inherited practice and becomes also an object of knowledge.

This changes several things at once:

  • it changes the way of teaching,

  • it changes the way of learning,

  • it changes the way of correcting,

  • it changes the way of naming,

  • and it changes the way of creating new figures without deforming the logic of the dance.

In other words, the MCC does not merely organize what already exists.

It also opens the possibility of a conscious choreographic synthesis, based on internal laws rather than arbitrary inventions.

A new stage

For this reason, it can be said that the MCC inaugurates a new stage.

Not because it denies the historical existence of empirical Casino,
but because it takes it as an object of analysis, refines it technically, and reorganizes it into an intelligible system.

That step, from inherited dance to understood dance,
is the true starting point of Well-Formed Casino.

What are, in a summarized way, the theoretical areas that make up the MCC?
